Sappho by French painter Charles August Mengin, 1877.
Sappho was a Greek poet who was writing poetry at about 600 BC. Her poetry centres on love, yearning, and passion targeted to both male and female subjects. Her life and work had such impact that she survived time, though only in fragments. The isle on which she was born was Lesbos, which is the root for what became the term ‘lesbian’. This late nineteenth century portrait has so much power, by the sling of her hips and the loose hold on her lyre to the very intensity of her face.
